Day 240, Wednesday

Today at work we going to be in a all day class about stress and communication. The program was interesting and co-workers enjoyed it. I was surprised how fast the day went and we finished up early at 1:30pm. This gave me time to go a meeting that didn't think I would be able to attend and sat for another hour and half. By 3:15pm I was done with sitting and luckily the last meeting was over.

I spent the last hour and 45 minutes of the day sorting through emails and returning phone calls.

With a still stiff calf muscle I wasn't able to go for a run but after sitting all day I had to go for a walk.

Day 239, Tuesday

The most notable event the day was going to workout and going for a run. It was a great day for a run and we got about a mile from the gym when I pulled my calf muscle in left leg. I had kind of had a cramp in it to begin with but it cramped way up that it was difficult to walk. I managed to walk it out good enough that I could get back to the gym and I rolled it out on a foam roller. I was really bummed because I had wanted to run for 30 minutes. and only got in 9 minutes. My trainer managed to make me sweat despite my calf.

I still managed to go shopping at Costco on the way home and when I got home I put my leg up and put alternating hot and cold packs on my calf. By bed time I was feeling like I would live and had no problem falling asleep.

at 11:30pm my cat Harris brought a live mouse into the house and let go in the living room so he and my other cat could play with it. I flipped on the light and the cats bolted for the cat door leaving me with the mouse. I was able to catch him with a t-shirt and toss him out in the field. About an hour later, the cat once again brought a mouse in, but this time it was dead. This time I tossed both the mouse and cat out.

Day 238, Monday

It was just your average busy Monday and the day flew by.  I remember looking up at the clock the first time and it was 11:50am.  I ran home for lunch and let the chickens out.

I had a meeting at 3pm to help select artists to bid on public art and then a meeting at the airport at 4:30.  The airport meeting finished at 6pm and I was home by 6:30pm.

The chickens had been busy digging in the yard they had made a mess of the gravel path through the flower beds.  I was able to fix the mess pretty quick using the electric blower.

I had just enough time to squeeze in a run and make it back before it was dark.

Day 237, Church and Chicks

It was another cold morning with, off and on snow storms, but no accumulation.  I did the normal church service at 11, the Fellowship Hall immediately after and then ran to the store for groceries.

I also stopped by the Big R, a local ranch supply store, to see if they had weathervane for the roof to the cupola - they did not.  What they did have in was baby chicks.  People were lined up to look and to by the fluffy little critters.  I really want to get three chickens so I have a flock of 10, but I'm not sure I want to start with baby chicks again.  I probably will, but I want to wait until mid April until I get them.

I managed to get a little yard work done, pruning low hanging branches off the big juniper tree next to the shop and then raking the yard back in place after the earth moving chickens had made huge holes in it.  Man, can those little guys move dirt.

The weather was pretty unforgiving all day and snowed off and on.  I did squeeze in a 2 mile run over to my friends and Jon and Beccy's and I delivered them some eggs.  It was a bit of challenge to run against the wind and carry eggs without shaking them to pieces.

The rest of the day I decided to stay indoors where it was warm and dry.

Day 236, Trees and Shed

Saturday brings it's usual chores and by noon I had cleaned up the weeks messes and had the house ready for another week.

The next project was to run out McPheeters Nursery and pick out some trees.  It has been snowing all morning but now at the moment it was actually sunny and 37.  I was able to zip out to the nursery and find the trees that I needed and pay for them.  I'm not exactly sure who we are going to get to move them and I know that I don't want to.  Each tree is estimated to weigh around 700 lbs.

This could make a great chicken coop and shed.
In my search for maybe adding 3 chickens to my flock I looked on line under "chickens" and found a large 10 x 20 shed for sale that had chickens painted on the front doors.  I wasn't thinking about buying a shed and making it a chicken coop out of it, but this ad got me thinking.  I placed a call and found out that the shed was only about 2 miles away.  The owner had already called a moving a company and found out that the cost would be about $600 for 3 hours.  With the closeness of the shed I think 3 hours would be just about right.  The shed has great potential, now the question is do I want to spend the money to buy it and move it...?

The chickens had been outside all day and enjoying digging in the flower beds, despite the snow, wind, and rain.  I was also happy to find that today they laid 6 eggs!

Day 235, I have never been so ready for a Friday and the weekend

My entire office was ready for the weekend.  There was just something about this week that seemed to absorb a lot of energy and we all needed a good weekend.

The weather was more of the same, wind, sun, snow, sleet, hail, sun, wind, or as we like to call it, a typical spring day on the high desert.

My dinner with friends was scheduled for 6:30pm at LaRosa in Bend and I was running late.  I was refinancing my house and today was the day to sign the papers.  My lender had a special program that made it very affordable with closing cost at around $1,800 which was substantially less than other lenders.  The signing however was late and of course this made me late.  I did manage to get there by 7pm, so I was only a half hour late and they had just finished having a cocktail.

Dinner was outstanding and we got caught up with each other and on what has been happening since we had seen each other last.  It was really nice connect and we all had a good time.   Just as we finished dinner, my trainer showed up to collect the eggs that owed  her and as it turned out she knew my friends, so she  joined us.

It was great to spend some time with friends and to finally deliver the eggs.  What a great way to start a weekend.

Day 234, Thursday

Not much to report today, still trying to figure out my new phone.  The chickens are only laying 3 eggs a day and I'm not sure why.

I had my workout in Bend at 4:15pm and once again I forgot to bring the eggs to give to my trainer.  She buys me two loaves of bread for Great Harvest.  She brought the bread on Tuesday and I forgot the eggs, but she said take the bead.  I forgot the bread too!  I have to be back in Bend on Friday to have dinner with friends, so I will bring the bread then.

The workout was brutal and we decided not to go for a run as it was snowing sideways and the wind was blowing hard.  Spring is Central Oregon can be a bit unforgiving and completely unpredictable.  After my hour of torture I was ready to go home.

I set a reminder in my phone not to forget the eggs!

Day 233, Wednesday

With a few snow flakes floating around, it was another cold morning.  Work was a very normal day and I was home around 5:30pm.

I did receive a text from the guy who might restore my trailer.  He is busy working on his 1948 Westcraft, that he recently acquired and he has another 1947 to work on after that.  I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed, I had thought March was the month the Traveleze would get a look-over and evaluated for restoration, but the month is quickly slipping away and more projects are slipping in front.  Oh well, there is still some time before trailer season arrives.

I was able to squeeze a short two mile run in before dinner and a short workout.  The rest of the evening was spent exploring my new phone and learning what all it can do.

Day 232, a iPhone

After three years of service it was time to turn in my old LG Voyager phone for a new iPhone 4.  Taking my tech savvy co-worker and electronic genius I knew I would get a phone that would last me for another 3 years and keep me on track at work.

The phone is miles above my last phone, but the concepts are the same and I think I will be able learn it fairly quickly.  The biggest problem so far, is going to the touch screen from the key pad of the voyager (I prefer the key pad).  I am sure I will grow to love the phone and probably only use an 1/8th of its features.

Today was also workout day.  It has been a week, since I last worked out, so I knew I was going die.

At home the chickens where running wild in the yard but they only laid 3 eggs.  I might need to look in the yard and see if they are laying eggs in the bushes.

Day 231, Monday

$10 shutters
I think we all got to work feeling the need for just one more day of rest, but alas it was Monday.  In an effort to start the day off on a positive note we ordered breakfast, splitting two orders among 4 people.  It seemed to help and we all felt better about the day and a new week.

On my lunch break I was able to return some unused items to Lowes, let the chickens out and run to the Habitat for Humanity Re-store to buy a shutter to cut up and put on the cupola.  I was really pleased to find two mahogany shutters for $10.

The Cupola with shutters, just needs paint, shingles and a weathervane.
After work I headed home and I was eager to see what the shutter would look like on the cupola, once I cut them to fit the cupola (completely for decoration).  I got them cut up and temporarily hung them to see how they looked. I was pleased with the look and and then took them off to get a coat of paint on them.  Once the cupola is all painted up and installed on top of the shed it will look great.

I was ready for dinner and then some TV time before bed.

Day 230, Building a Cupola

It may be the first day of Spring, but you would never know it.  It was snowing lightly and there was about an inch of snow on the ground.  It was a great morning to stay in bed and just take in the morning nice and slow.

Church was at 11am and I was to be an usher, so I needed to be there by 10am.  When I walked in the door I was greeted with, "Good morning, you're going to be the lead usher".  I had no idea what that meant, I've only ushered twice before and I wasn't paying attention to what the lead usher does.   Luckily, one of  the more senior member stepped in and took over and I just had usher as usual.

The start of the cupola

After church I needed to run by Lowes and pick up a few trim pieces, and a couple boxes of screws.  I figured I would be able to assemble the cupola and have it ready to go up on the shed by Monday.  The cupola is built in two parts the body, which is just a big box with the pitch of the roof cut out and the roof.  By the time I get all the trim on and the roofing it will be kind of heavy to lug up a ladder, so by building it in two parts it makes it a little easier to get up on the roof.

Once the cupola is on the roof I'll have to put a weathervane on it.  I'm waiting for input from my folks but I haven't heard from them yet.

The chickens were out for most of the day and really went to town digging in the flower beds  I'm not sure how I am going to grow a garden or flowers with them constantly digging everything up.

It was a cold  yucky day, so it was great day to be in the garage working on a project.

Day 229, Tree shopping and Cupola building

Winter does not want to let go and it was spitting snow in the morning.  I got up and started doing my Saturday morning chores.  I also needed to run several errands including running to the Post Office, picking up Chicken feed and the tree shopping.

10' to 11' Colorado Blue Spruce trees
I needed to do some tree shopping, so I went out to McPheeters Nursery and  I got a guided tour of the trees from the owner. They had lots of 10' Colorado spruces that would be perfect.  At a little over 700lbs each it is going to take a special crew to plant them.

Back home, my brother and his boys were cleaning up the limbs on the 40 acres.  There was an amazing amount of damage done to the trees during the snow storm two weeks ago.  My brother has also constructed a shed on my parents property directly across from driveway.  It looks like box with a garage door, so it needs to be dressed up so it doesn't look so awkward.  My brother had saved some siding so I could build a cupola for the roof.  With a cupola and a weathervane it should look more like a small barn and fit more with the country setting.

I got the body of the cupola built before dark and tomorrow I'll work on the roof.  I will need to run to Lowes to buy some screws and trim to complete the cupola.  I also went on line and shopped for weathervanes which range anywhere from $19, to $300.  I would like to find one that is to scale and is attractive, but one that will not become a target for theft or target practice.

Day 228, Friday and the Rod and Custom Car Show

It was a cold wintery morning, but it was Friday.  Work was pretty normal and I think everyone in the office was ready for the weekend.  I know that I was ready to have a day to kick back and take a break.

The Batmobile
Friday was also the start of the Central Oregon Rod and Custom Car Show at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center.  I figured it would be fun thing to go to tonight after I ran home and grabbed a bite to eat.

I got home about 5:30pm and let the chickens out.  They were happy to be free as usual, but they had only laid 3 eggs, slackers.

After getting something to eat, I headed off to the Expo Center and the car show.  There were a lot of familiar cars, but several new ones too.  The main attraction was the Batmobile.  You couldn't help but have a flash back to when you were a kid and actually thought Batman was real.  It was kind of neat to see.

48 Chevrolet
I tend to like the older more original cars and interspersed amongst the custom hot rods were several nice original cars.  I really liked a 48 Chevrolet, it only had 40K miles on it from new.  I had to stop and wonder how it would look pulling the Traveleze?  It was for sale, but its 6 cylinder might not be strong enough to pull the little trailer without struggling.

It was a nice show, but it was now 8:30pm and I was ready to head home and kick back on the couch.

Day 227, Leadership Thursday

Today is the day I facilitate our Leadership program, so I was up and out the door a little earlier than normal.  The nice thing about today's event is that the first half of the class would actually be held at my office so didn't need to pack anything up.  The disappointing part of the day was that 6 out of the 15 were out, so it was a very small class.

The always goes pretty fast and we ended the day in Bend, meeting with our County Commissioners, County Clerk and one of the Regional Representatives to our US Senator.  All in all, despite having to "punt" a few times the day went very well and I think everyone got something out of it.
Back pasture turned up ready for seeding.

I was glad to get home by 6:30pm and I still had the opportunity to let the chickens out to enjoy an hour of freedom.

My neighbor had been busy at my place and turned up my back pasture to re-seed it.  He keeps his horses on my property and takes very good of place in return.  I decided that I could pull up the last of the corn and pull the roots up.  Spring will get here eventually and it's almost time to start thinking about the garden.

Corn stalks and the roots pulled up getting ready for planting
On the trailer front, I'm dieing to hear about and see this new trailer, but I'm also anxious to have him pick my trailer up and to give me an honest evaluation.  I need to know what I should do with it, so I can either get going with it, or let it go.  The Portland Swap meet is coming up and this will be a great opportunity to look for a car to pull the trailer, if I am going to keep it.

Looking forward to Friday and the weekend.

Day 226, Wednesday

1947 Westcraft
I received word that my the guy who will restore my trailer was just in the Portland area picking up a 1948 Westcraft Sequoia.  I know a Westcraft looks like and I was pretty sure I had seen a Trolley Top before but I was excited to see a picture.

This was a great find and I'm sure when he is done with it will be an amazing trailer.

There really wasn't much to report on for Wednesday, other than it is cold and spitting snow.  In other words it was a typical Spring day in Central Oregon.

Day 225, Tuesday and workout

I have not adjusted well to daylight savings time and have been staying up until midnight, so when morning rolls around I'm not ready to get up.

Work was pretty normal with one last proof read on the Visitor Guide before it goes off to print.  Everyone was busy working on it and making corrections and I think we were all a little surprised at how many more corrections we all made.  I know when I write this blog, my computer at home does not have spell check and wow for the errors.  I also write this late in the evening and my brain has obviously started to shut down.

With all of our corrections done, we needed to deliver the final corrections to Bend.  It worked out perfectly for me to take the corrections and then head to my workout.

My workout was great and we were able to spend some time working out the knot in my calf muscle.  After an hour I was beat and ready for home.

The chickens were able to get out and run around the yard for about 2 hours before it got dark.  They only laid three eggs and one dud (an egg with no shell).  The dud was just egg white and yoke no shell, this happens every now and then and can be a sign of a sick chicken or lack of nutrients.  I'll have to keep my eyes open and see if it happens again.

Day 224, Monday the 14th of May

It's hard to believe that we are almost half way through March.  There is a lot happening this Spring and I can't help but feel the next few months are just going to fly by.

Work was busy as usual and I had a lunch meeting that kept me from coming home and letting the chickens out.  I figured they had two full days out and I could let them out when I got home.  Now that we are daylight savings time it will be light an hour longer and they should have plenty time to root up some bugs and make a mess of my yard.

After a 9 hour day at work I was ready to go home, but first I needed to stop by the store and pick up a few mouse traps.  Last light at about 4am, one of my cats came in the cat door and I think brought a mouse with him.  I could be wrong, but I think he let the mouse go.  I heard the cat batting at something in the hall, but by the time I got the light, my glasses and a towel to catch a mouse, the cat was just looking at me.  There is a chance he was just playing, but I don't want to take any chances and would rather catch the mouse if there is one.

Yesterday I ran my loop which is just a little over 2 miles and as I reached my house I got a cramp in my calve.  I thought nothing of it until today when I went to go for a run again and the cramp came screaming back.  I figured my run was done and back home and watched some TV.

Day 223, A windy Sunday

I went to bed Saturday night and forgot all about Daylight Savings Time.  I woke up and though wow, great night sleep and then looked at my phone which had changed to the correct time.  Oh yeah, new time and I had lost an hour of sleep.

I picked up my buddy Doug on the way to church and as usual arrived as the Choir began to sing.  We try to get there on time and even early, but we always make it at the same time.  To my defense it was 10:57 when they started service.  Usually service runs exactly an hour or a little over, but today it ended 6 minutes early.  I don't think any was going to complain.

Back home I had a few more things that needed to get done around house, but first I needed to help my brother cut down some tree branches on my folks property that were damaged during the big snow.  One of the branches was hanging down and into the road just about the height of a pickup truck windshield.  It was a real danger to traffic and it needed to come down.  My brother had chainsaw and ladder and with me truck we were able to get all the troubled limbs down, despite the strong winds.

Next to my house there was enough protection from the wind to be able to wash my truck.  It needed a thorough cleaning inside and out.  After about 2 hours I had it standing tall and looking not so winter weather battered.  I have posted my truck on Craigslist along with the Rolls and Cadillac.  We shall see if there is any interest on any of these vehicles.

It was another great day and tomorrow is another Monday.

Day 222, A great Saturday

Even though the weather was not perfect it was still a nice day, a little cool and some pretty strong winds, but nice all in all.  There is something awesome about waking up feeling good and having nothing pressing you.

I had several chores that I wanted to get done, but they were things I enjoyed doing and even though time consuming I just happy to be enjoying a Saturday.

The chickens spent the day outside and really worked the  yard over good.  They seem to make a mess no matter what they are doing, but for some reason I just really don't care.  This feeling might change as the yard starts to turn green again and I try to plant a garden, which they will probably try to eat.

At 6:30pm I went to my friends Bruce and Mary Ann for dinner.  Bruce was at KFC and wanted to know if I had eaten, which I hadn't.  It's been a long time since I have had KFC and I told him if he brought their biscuits  I would be all over it.  There is nothing better than spending time friends and I enjoyed ever minute of it.  Bruce and I even tried to concur a few levels of Donkey Kong, however we were defeated.

It was a great Saturday.

Day 221, Friday and the weekend is at hand.

Another Friday and it arrived just in time.  It hasn't been a stressful week, but it has been busy and I'm ready for the weekend.

1948 Plymouth
Work was busy and I had several meetings both in the morning and in the afternoon.  My last meeting for the day ended at 5:15pm and then I we planned to go to dinner to the restaurant behind my office.  When I stepped out of the back of my office to walk to the restaurant, there was 48 Plymouth in the parking lot that looked to be mostly original.  It had a for sale sign in the window and I think it is one that I have seen listed on Craigslist and one my father has seen at Eagle Crest.  It's a very pretty 40's car I might have to call on it and take a closer look.

After dinner it was time to go home and kick back and relax.  I did my chores of checking on the chickens and gathering the 5 eggs.  My brother was burning a stump on my parents property directly across from my driveway so I went and checked on it.  It had mostly burned it self out.

It is sad to watch and see all the devastation of the earthquake in Japan., my thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Day 220, Thursday

Not much to report today,  pretty typical day at work.  I was able to come home at lunch and let the chickens out.  They laid 4 eggs.

I went to dinner with my folks and my brothers family to Applebees.  My nephew loves the place, so that's where we went.  It was nice to have dinner together, but we were all tired, so as soon as we finished we headed home.

With this being Thursday night I wanted to get a jump on my weekend chores to started doing my laundry and cleaning of the kitchen counter.  I did two loads of laundry and was ready for bed by 11.

It has been a long week and tomorrow is Friday...Yeaaaa.

Day 219, A long day

I woke up to beautiful sunshine and clear blue skies.  It was the type of morning that just lifted  your spirits and made you want to jump out of bed.

Work was busy with writing last minuted articles for our visitor guide and proofing for errors.  My workout day for Thursday was moved to today, so I didn't take a lunch and left for my workout at 3:50pm

The airfield side of the the new airport terminal.

I got to Bend at 4:20pm and quickly changed into some running gear to go for a run.  My trainer was ready and we went for a 20 minute at a very fast pace.  It was a beautiful day but a little breezy, but we still got in a nice run.  I was a little stiff in my legs from yesterdays workout so we spent a few minutes stretching.

I didn't have time for a full hour as I had to be back in Redmond at 5:30pm for an Airport Commission meeting.  I arrived with plenty of time and we had a good meeting.  We  have several new members on the Commission so we took a tour of the airport, boarding a bus and going out on the runway and taxiways to view project areas.  I've been on the Commission for years and served as Chair for nearly 6 years.  I have always enjoyed working with the airport and watching it grow.

It was an extremely busy day and I got home at 8pm.  I checked on the chickens, refilled their food and water and collected 4 eggs.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Day 218, A wet Tuesday

It was a very cold morning with a rain and snow mix, but mostly rain.  My parents were driving to Portland and had taken my truck because of the potential for snow on the mountain.  In exchange my truck I got their Cadillac for the day and while it is a beautiful 2006 DTS, it just doesn't have the character or history of the big Fleetwood body Broughams.

Clean truck

Work was busy with my monthly Board meeting and the frantic effort of finish our Visitor Guide to send to the printer.  My lunch was he Board meeting so I didn't have time to run home and let the chickens out.  I left the office just before 4pm to drive to Bend to get my workout in for the day.  This is my short day, so I had to work hard and non-stop to get all my work in and to keep my heart rate up for at least 30 minutes.

Following the workout I drove to my folks home to exchange cars and get my truck.  My Dad had washed my truck and it was all clean waiting for me.  They had only been home an hour and  they were just finished cocktail hour and were getting ready for dinner when I got there.  Naturally I was invited to stay, which I did.  Shortly after dinner however I headed  home to check on the animals.

The chickens laid 5 eggs.

Day 217, Monday Monday

The weather has turned a bit cooler again, but it was sunny and it was deceiving from inside my warm office.

Chickens enjoying the yard
At noon I was able to come home and let the chickens out and after a productive weekend they only laid 2 eggs for the today.  They really are amusing birds and a lot of fun.  There is something about watching a chicken run that makes me laugh.

There really wasn't much to report and the highlight of my day was going to dinner with my folks.  I enjoy every minute I get to spend with them and going to dinner with them is a treat.  Tomorrow they are going to drive to Portland and with the threat of snow in the mountain pass they are going to take my truck with 4 wheel drive.

My evening was pretty quiet and I was ready for bed.

Day 216, A nice Sunday

After a sketchy night sleep, I laid in bed for a long while, enjoying the view of the backyard and the company of my two mangy cats.  I finally got up about 8:30am, fed the beasts and let the chickens out.

The last of the American dream a 1990 Cadillac Brougham D'elegance.

This was a pretty typical Sunday, with Church at 11am to noon and then home to do a few outside chores.  I also had the opportunity to wash the Cadillac and take some pictures of it.  This amazing car has been sitting in the garage without a cover and it had accumulated a layer of dust from months of sitting.  With just 10,120 miles, it still looks like new.   I have been thinking of selling it, so I can make room to buy a 1950's car to pull the Traveleze.  I don't know why I have such an affection for this car.  Every time I see it reminds me of my grandparents and summers in Iowa.  My Grandparents on my Dad's side always had a big Cadillac and my Grandparents on my Mom's side always had big Buick's.   I remember riding around with them and it made a lasting impression on me. I  especially remember riding with my Grandmother in the backseat of their Cadillac and leaning on each other around every corner and giggling.
Iowa corn fields

Detasseling corn

This car symbolizes all my memories of my childhood, of hot Iowa summers, lime stone county roads, rich black Iowa soil, endless miles of corn fields, church, casseroles, table cloths with every meal (breakfast, super and dinner), ice cold milk poured from a pitcher, corn candy in a glass dish, fresh butterhorns and cinnamon rolls backed from scratch, yellow pear tomatoes grown in the garden, the Renwick water tower, names like International Harvester, Dekalb and New Holland, the smell of the lumber my Grandfather owned in Adel,  fireflies, tornados, the noontime whistle at the creamery, my cousins, a sense of family history where my parents were children, where my mom detassled corn and the feeling of unconditional love from my Grandparents took all the cares and worries away.

This car represents all this and the American dream, where a immigrant from Norway and a rural farmer could make an honest living and raise a family.  Where hard work and family were a priority and after a lifetime of clean living could lead to a small reward, a true made in America symbol and just a little pride of knowing that you own the king of the road, a Cadillac.

Day 215, Waking up with the feeling of a heavy chest

Good morning, are you up yet?
With clean sheets on my bed and a beautiful Saturday morning I felt great, but I woke up with the feeling of something very heavy on my chest.  I had two cats looking at me wondering why I wasn't up yet and more importantly, why have I not feed them.  It's nice to feel wanted, but it would feel even nicer to be able to sleep in and wake up on your own schedule.

Needless to say with two faces staring at me and pushing the air out of my lungs, it was time to get up and feed them.

It was a beautiful morning, so I let the chickens out first thing so they could enjoy the day to its fullest.  I have a lot of yard work to do and some maintenance to get caught up on after the week long spell of snow.  I have 4 skyrocket junipers that were flattened by the weight of the snow and I need to rope them back into position.

Snow flattened Junipers

Looking at the flatten junipers, I wondered how I was going to get them back in position.  They were once 10' tall and now they leaning over.  I figured it was going to take lots of rope, a tall 2x6 for leverage and my truck to get them back in place.  I started with the juniper most flattened and with my truck and the  2x6, I was able to pull it upright and then tie it off to the  one Juniper that did not fall over.  I continued this process with the other two junipers until they were all up right and then I used a heavy nylon rope to rope them all together.  Working with Juniper is a scratchy job and despite my long sleeves my forearms got scratched up a lot.  I'm allergic to juniper so I washed the scratches and took a allergy pill.

10' junipers tied back up.

It was a very nice day despite being somewhat overcast and I got a lot of work done around the yard.  I was also able to take down the horse fence in the front yard, rolling up the barbed wire, electric fence line and pulling up the posts.  Its nice having the horses in the front pasture during winter, but I like it when the fence is gone and front lawn just blends in with the field.

At 6:30pm I met up my friends, Wanda, Conan, Bruce and Mary Ann to go to a comedy improve night in Bend.  I had no idea what to expect, but figured it would be something new and different.  The attendance was sparse and there were a lot of children.  Needless to say they had to cater to their level and it was rather painful to sit through.  I couldn't help but think it was an hour and a half of my life that I would never get back.

A night of Improv...Ughh!

After the program we drove back to Redmond and went to a yogurt store where you select frozen yogert and then put on different toppings.  I had vanilla yogurt with crushed Heath bars, Butterfingers, hot chocolate and caramel poured on top.  Following that we went back to Wanda and Conan's to play wii and enjoy the rest of the evening.

I got home around midnight and my arms were burning from the Juniper scratches.  I put on some scratch ointment and went to bed.  At 2:30am I woke up with my screaming in pain and a fever.  I wondered if I needed to drive myself to the ER.  I took some Tylenol and a prescription allergy pill and went back to bed.  With in about 40 minutes I decided I was going to live and fell back to to sleep.

Moral of the story, stay away from juniper.

Day 214, Another TGIF

This was another long day and I had thought yesterday was bad.  I didn't have the opportunity to get lunch, running from one project to the next, but I was offered half a pulled pork sandwich from a co-worker,  which a gladly excepted.
The day flew by and before I knew it was 5:15pm on a Friday and it was time to close up the office and head home.

My folks had called and wanted to take me to dinner, so I needed to be home by 5:45pm.  I was able to check on the chickens and let them out to enjoy the last few remaining hours of daylight.  I also had time to toss the wash into the dryer, which were the sheets to my bed.  It was important to get them in the dyer so they would ready by bedtime.  I love clean sheets and there is no better time to have them on your bed, than Friday night, so you can sleep in Saturday morning and enjoy them.  I had time to feed the cats and change my clothes before my parents arrived.

My folks arrived exactly at 5:45pm and I was ready.  We were going to Diego's and it was going to be packed.  We got our favorite table in the front corner window and was nice to be able to talk.  We spent about about 50 minutes, enjoying our dinner and then we gave up our table, so others could be seated.

Back home I went to close up the chickens for the night.  They were all accounted for and topped off their feed and water .  Tomorrow they can spend the entire day outside.

Back inside I needed to make my bed and then I'm done with another week.  Let the weekend begin.

Day 213, A busy Thursday

I packed a lot into my day.  Work was busy and I had my workout at 4:15pm, then the Son's of Norway Executive meeting from 6pm to 7:30pm and the General meeting from 7:30 to 8:30pm.

For my workout we went outside for a run and my trainer set a faster than normal pace for me.  I'm a 45 year old, out of shape, 6'4",  210+  asthmatic, what the heck am I doing running.  We ran for a little over 25 minutes and I figure we covered about 3 miles.  My endurance is lacking, but I my lungs are holding up and actually so did my legs.  With continued work, I think I can actually get this running thing down.  I finished out my hour doing a number of painful exercises, including pull ups and a ton of ab work.

Following the workout I had time to run to the store and pick up a party tray and a pie from Safeway to take to the Son's of Norway meeting.  I was starving so when I got to the lodge, a little early, I opened up the meat and cheese tray and had myself a little snack.  I had no intention to eat any of the pie, but it looked good and I figured people would enjoy it. The meetings were entertaining and before I knew it, it was time for me to leave.  It was now 8:30pm and I needed to be back in Redmond to pick my parents up at the airport at 9:30pm.

I got back home at 9pm and I had not been home all day.  I went and checked on the chickens and they had laid 5 eggs. I replenished their water and topped off their feeder.  Tonight is trash night so I needed to take the trash can to the end of the driveway.  I had enough to time to feed the cats and toss a load of laundry in the washer and then it was time to head to the airport.

With my folks picked up and safely back home I finally got  home at 10:20pm.  It was a long day.

Day 212, Hump Day

I was up early for a morning meeting at 7:30am and then back in the office by 9am.  The week seems to be flying buy and so was today.

The chickens got let out at noon and they laid 5 eggs.  The temperature was in the high 40's and it was mostly sunny.  I figured they would really enjoy the afternoon.  I did see on my drive home for a lunch a Bald Eagle flying around.  Eagles are amazing hunters and I wondered if my chickens would be safe.  Heck even the cats could be targets to an eagle.

After my lunch break I took my truck into Les Schwab to have the front rotors turned.  Every time I hit the brakes I get that pulsing brake actions which drives me nuts.  Les could get it in and  have done before 5pm, so dropped it off and had one of my co-workers pick me up.

At 5pm I got a ride back to Les Schwab and my truck was done.  I drove home and the braking was back to normal with no pulsing.

Day 211, Workout and Costco

The work day flew by and before I knew it I was heading to Bend for my workout.  I had been a little low on energy and head had been a little stuffed up over the weekend, so I wondered how I would do on the treadmill.  I was a little slow at first, but got up to speed quickly.  I was able to breathe easily and keep running without any issues which was nice.  My trainer proceeded to try to kill me but I survived.   I'm always surprised how fast my workouts go and before I know I was done.

On my way home I did a quick run by Costco to checkout mattresses.  I want a new softer mattress, one that doesn't hurt me when I sleep.  My mattress is so firm that I actually feel like I'm sleeping on a board and that my hips are getting bruised.  I found one that I think will be great and I will pick one up this weekend.  I actually think I'll sleep better tonight just knowing I'll have a new mattress soon.  With mattress shopping out of the way I managed to find a few other items I needed and then I was headed for home.

Back at home I put the chickens away and I was done for the night.

Day 210, Monday and the snow is melting

Probably the most notable part of the day is that I was able to go home at noon and let the chickens out.  The snow had melted enough along the edge of fence that they could make their way out of the coop along the fence, hop the rock wall and make a small leap/flight to areas of the lawn that were exposed.  They were so happy to be out and running about.

The chickens first taste of freedom after the big snow.

When I came home around 5:30pm, the chickens were still out enjoying their freedom.  At about 6pm I went out to put them in for the night, two followed me to the coop and the rest were not sure how to get back, without stepping on snow.  With a little calling 3 managed to fly to the rock wall and then walked along the wall to the pen.  They had to jump the small area of snow to get back to the coop, but they made it.  The other two took some coaxing, I had to walk them back showing them the path with the least amount of snow. They all seemed happy to be back in the the safety of their pen with food and water and out of the wind.

I had no real plans for the evening and spent sometime looking for trailers on line.  I was surprised to find another 1950 Spartanette needing restoration and new home.  I think one of these days I'll have to get one of these silver palaces.

I watched a little of the news before going to bed and was depressed to hear that gas climbed another 20 cents last week and is expected to be at $5 a gallon by summer.  That is really going to stop any economic recovery.  You can't pull a Spartanette with a Toyota Prius, or a Chevy Volt, so it kind puts a damper on the idea of having a trailer.
